First, we started overdubbing all of Ryan's parts. First for the guitar, we overdubbed his full part again so he could focus solely on that and not just on singing. We did a few takes of that, and then started to overdub some guitar parts over the chorus as well as a call-and-answer section near the end. There was also a really cool statement he recorded at the end to finish up the song. He played around with some guitar pedals to get a truly unique sound--somewhere between scratchy noises and UFO landing sounds that are really cool. Not sure about mixing it in yet, but if we want something like that I'm really glad Ryan was able to play something like that so we could get it recorded, if not for this mix, for something else in time that that would sound awesome in!
Next came the vocals. We had Ryan stay in the iso booth and now record all his vocals. We got a few takes and after a few punch-ins, the vocals sounded solid and we were able to move on to some other tracks!
The remainder of the time was focused mainly on Will and some auxiliary percussion to record. The first instrument we decided to play with was the Timbales! Will brought some in, and we recorded some really nice punches to the phrases. Some blended so well with what was going on in the rest of the music, I was super impressed! The sound of the timbales really went well with the style of the song and accented everything it needed to, without overtaking any section or instrument. And then, for a more steady rhythm, we got out a cabasa. Will played a nice rhythm throughout the entire piece that really grounded the whole song and gave it a nice backbone for all the instruments to sit with.
By the end of the night we were super happy about what we were able to record. The song itself was really groovy and everyone of the performers were really talented. I still have it stuck in my head, three days later. I'm really excited to get to mixing it, because the band was really happy and grateful to us for getting to record their band and said they look forward to all the mixes, and will definitley be using them as demos to help them grow and get into more gigs and places to play.
